Carbon Tax Rebate 2024

In Canada, the Carbon Tax, also known as the Fuel Charge, is a fee or tax applied to the carbon content of fuels at different governmental levels. As of 2023, it starts at CA$65 per tonne of CO2 and is set to increase to CA$170 by 2030. To ease the tax burden on citizens in New Brunswick, Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, the Canadian Revenue Agency is gearing up for the 2024 Carbon Tax Rebate.

If you live in one of these provinces, you’re eligible for the rebate, distributed in four equal payments. This tax-free amount aims to help qualified taxpayers offset the cost of federal pollution pricing and includes a basic amount along with an extra sum for residents in small and rural communities.

The Canadian government has revamped the process for the carbon tax rebate, now known as the Climate Action Incentive Payment. Previously claimed yearly on income tax returns, it has transitioned to quarterly tax-free payments since July 2022.

If you’re in Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, or Nova Scotia, you can snag your federal fuel charge rebate. It’s distributed in three equal parts in the first year and shifts to four quarterly payments starting from July 1, 2023.
