Ireland Social Welfare Amount Increase News

Since January 2024, various social welfare programs implemented by the Irish government have experienced an increase in amounts. In this section, we’ve compiled the comprehensive list of adjustments for each social welfare program.

Domiciliary Care Allowance Increase:

The monthly amount for domiciliary care allowance will now see an increase of €10. Additionally, child benefit will now be extended for every 18-year-old still enrolled full-time in school, a change from the previous practice of payment only until their eighteenth birthday.

State Pension:

Starting January 1st, individuals have the option to work beyond the existing qualifying age of 66 and can continue to do so until they reach the age of 70. This flexibility is particularly beneficial for those who may not have accumulated enough stamps for the full state pension. For each additional year worked, the weekly pension will see a 5% increase. There are also noteworthy changes in entitlements for caregivers.

Working Family Payment Income Threshold:

As of January, the income threshold for the working family benefit will rise by €54 per week. This adjustment aims to safeguard families receiving the payment, ensuring they do not lose out when the minimum wage increases to €12.70 per hour.

Second Energy Credit:

Starting January 1, 2024, Second Energy Credit benefits will show an increase of €150 in the accounts.

Employment Programme Increases:

Commencing January 2024, individuals enrolled in Community Employment (CE), Tús, the Rural Social Scheme, or the Work Placement Experience Program will receive a weekly raise of €12.

Furthermore, starting at the end of January, weekly social assistance benefits will receive a one-time doubling. For individuals already eligible for the Christmas bonus payment, it will be disbursed at the new, elevated rates commencing the week of January 29. Additionally, Minister Humphreys announced a 0.1 percent increase in workers’ PRSI contributions.

As per the Department of Social Protection, this increase aims to provide “additional financial assistance for low-income families” and expand the eligibility of more households for the payment. Furthermore, the government has confirmed that income tax rates will stay unaltered at 20% and 40%. However, adjustments to tax credits and income tax bands are slated for 2024.
