Disability Living Allowance March 2024

The Disability Living Allowance is designed to support individuals facing severe impairments, encompassing both children and adults. This tax-free allowance aids in covering essential costs and mobility expenses. It consists of two components: the care component, addressing daily tasks like dressing and washing, and the mobility component, which considers challenges in walking and sitting, especially on unfamiliar paths. Whether mobility issues arise from a temporary illness, permanent condition, or sudden accident, the allowance is paid in three weekly installments based on the required level of care.

What Illness Qualifies Disability Living Allowance?

The Allowance is granted to children from birth and continues to support seniors as long as they require it. It encompasses all medical bills and treatment costs for the candidates throughout their lifetime.

Certain illnesses make individuals eligible to apply for the Allowance, with 21 diseases out of 575 qualifying for consideration. These include visual, respiratory, neurological, musculoskeletal, psychiatric, malignant, endocrine, cardiovascular, kidney-related, hearing disorders, genitourinary, gastrointestinal, skin, autoimmune, infectious, liver/gallbladder/biliary tract, immune system, hematological, multisystem/extremes of age, metabolic, and cases listed as unknown or missing.

Both children and adults with these specified illnesses can apply for the disability living allowance. Some children may receive a lifetime allowance, while others get it for a specified duration, typically three years. Those seeking to extend the allowance beyond the timeline must reapply.

How Much is Disability Living Allowance?

In April 2023, the Disability Living Allowance (DLA) saw an increase of 10.4 percent, impacting both the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC). The issuance of this allowance is done on a weekly basis. According to last year’s reports, the weekly care component ranged from £2.45 to £9.35, while the mobility component ranged from £2.45 to £6.50.

Let’s delve into the current rates of the disability allowance for both categories. For the daily living component:

  • Enhanced Rate: £101.75
  • Standard Rate: £68.10

And for the mobility component:

  • Enhanced Rate: £71.00
  • Standard Rate: £28.90

Candidates qualifying for the highest mobility payment are entitled to receive £178.45 weekly, £748.53 monthly, and £8,983 annually. Additionally, individuals with a terminal illness, resulting in a life expectancy of less than 12 months, can apply for the Personal Independence Payment (PIP). PIP covers hospital stay expenses, treatment costs, and even funeral expenses for eligible applicants.

Disability Living Allowance Possible Change 2024

The adjustments in the disability allowance take into account both medical expenses and the overall cost of living, reflecting recent modifications. In line with the new budget, authorities have announced an increase in the allowance starting from April 2024. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) benefit will also see a 6.5 percent boost.

Specifically, the lowest care cost will be raised from £26.90 to £28.70, and the lowest mobility cost will undergo a similar change from £26.90 to £28.70.

For children currently receiving the allowance, if circumstances change necessitating additional support, they have the option to apply for an increment in rewards. Seniors in care centers will find relief as the allowance covers the charges associated with their care.
