What is OTB (Ontario Trillium Benefit)?
The Ontario Trillium Benefit (OTB) consists of three credits: the Northern Ontario Energy Credit, the Ontario Sales Tax Credit, and the Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit. This credit is specifically designed to help Ontario residents cover their energy expenses, as well as sales and property taxes. Many residents in the province receive these monthly payments from the government.
In order to avail themselves of OTB benefits, Ontario residents must qualify for at least one of the specified credits. This implies that eligibility for OTB is maintained even if a resident qualifies for just one credit. Monthly payments for eligible beneficiaries are determined based on their 2022 income tax and benefit returns and are distributed in monthly installments.
OTB Payment Dates
If individuals decide to wait for a lump-sum payment of the Ontario Trillium Benefit in 2023 and the annual amount exceeds $360, they will receive a single payment on June 10, 2024. However, if the annual amount is less than $360, the payment will be issued in the first month.
For those who opt to receive their entire OTB Entitlement at once when filing taxes initially, it’s possible. However, individuals who haven’t filed their 2022 return and want to receive the OTB in a single payment must make this choice before December 31, 2023. To find out Ontario Trillium Benefit payment dates, individuals can refer to the official website of the Government of Canada.
