How Much Should You Spend on a Gaming Laptop?
Because gaming laptops use more expensive components than standard consumer laptops, their costs will be greater. However, the price range for gaming laptops is wide: from less than $1,000 to $4,000 and beyond. Laptops for gaming at a reasonable price range from about $750 to roughly $1,250. It comes with a system that can play games at full HD resolution (1080p) with the settings toned down in most titles, as well as games with the highest possible quality settings in more simple ones. Solid-state drives (SSDs) and hard drives (HDDs) can be used for storage (SSD). An SSD as the primary boot drive is always better, and hard drives have been demoted to secondary drives in larger laptops in recent years.
What if you could have it your way? A better-quality 1080p screen (which supports high refresh rates; we’ll get to that in a moment) will allow for smoother gameplay at high or maximum settings, as well as support for VR headsets. From $1,250 to $2,000, several models are available.

You should expect seamless gameplay at 1080p with visual details maxed out on a high-refresh screen on a high-end PC. Depending on the screen’s capabilities, you may even be able to play at 4K resolution! When it comes to the most advanced models, they should be capable of powering a VR headset and supporting multiple external displays. It is common for these workstations to include PCI Express solid-state drives and to cost more than $2,000, typically more than $3,000.
A hard drive to augment the SSD and ultra-efficient cooling fans are optional additions on some laptops in this class that support QHD (2,560-by-1,440 pixel) or 4K panels. A growing number of them, thanks to current improvements, are even slim and portable. Laptops in this price range offer a choice between great performance in a tiny chassis or maximum power in a larger chassis.
Put the GPU First: Which Gaming Laptop Graphics to Get?
For those who are unfamiliar, here’s a quick primer: GPUs with higher numbers tend to be better than those with lower numbers. When comparing Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 to RTX 3070, the “80” represents the generation while the “30” denotes faster frame rates and better graphics. Currently, Nvidia dominates the mobile GPU market with its “Ampere” microarchitecture-based discrete mobile GPUs. Laptops using the GeForce RTX 30-Series GPUs (e.g., the RTX 3070 or RTX 3080) were the first to use Ampere GPUs.
The previous “Turing” (20 Series) generation was replaced by this platform, and you won’t see many 20-Series GPUs (such the RTX 2070) in 2022. You may still be able to get them in older laptops at some internet merchants, but you won’t be able to locate them in any current models. A reference to the platform’s ray-tracing capabilities and a departure from previous generations, the top-end GPUs in new laptops are now designated “RTX” rather than “GTX” (with games that support it).
The performance of Ampere laptop GPUs isn’t on par with that of Turing desktop GPUs, but it’s still extremely good, and it can do more ray-tracing. However, we’ve discovered with Ampere that the power delivered to the GPU by laptop manufacturers can cause significant performance differences between the same GPU in one laptop and the same GPU in another. Read our mobile Ampere testing article to learn why this is the case. This complicates the process of purchasing a laptop by simply focusing on the GPU’s name on a piece of paper. It is more critical than ever before that we test each system on an individual basis.
The RTX 3070 Ti and RTX 3080 Ti from Nvidia pushed the boundaries of high-end laptop GPUs at CES 2022. So far, we’ve only looked at a few of laptops equipped with these, but they, together with the RTX 2070 Super and RTX 2080 Super, raise the performance and price ceilings for laptop GPUs even further.

Once you’ve made it down the power ladder, it’s time to go up. Amid the RTX 3070 and 3080, the GeForce RTX 3050 and RTX 3050 Ti, which will be released in spring 2021, are the RTX 3060 and RTX 3060 Ti. In addition to this, the recently announced RTX 2050 fills in the middle ground between this generation and the preceding one. Although it’s a little out of the usual, it’s a sign of supply difficulties for 30 Series GPUs because of its name and time.

The GeForce GTX GPUs described before are located below the RTX 3050. Turing-based GPUs, such as the GTX 1650, GTX 1650 Ti, and GTX 1660 Ti, lack ray-tracing capabilities. Despite the fact that these GTX GPUs are older and less powerful, they’re still important. Non-gaming systems that desire some discrete GPU capability are still releasing with these GPUs, but they will be replaced by the GeForce RTX 3050 and RTX 3050 Ti in most low-cost gaming laptops. Smaller gaming laptops like the Razer Blade Stealth 13 and non-gaming laptops like the Dell XPS 15 can also benefit from the GTX 1650 Ti’s graphics power.

Despite Nvidia’s dominance in graphics, AMD has seen a rise in popularity. Laptops with Radeon RX 5k or 6k Series GPUs are becoming more common. We’re seeing more cases of AMD graphics being used with AMD processors than we have in the past, despite the fact that AMD GPUs are often paired with Intel processors. Some AMD-on-AMD CPU/GPU systems were available from Dell and MSI, for example.) New GPUs include the Radeon RX 6800M, RX 6700M, and RX 6600M, but just a few systems like the MSI Delta 15 have seen and tested them.
This intricacy does not prevent us from drawing some simple generalisations concerning graphics performance. If you want to play the latest AAA games on a 1080p screen with most of the bells and whistles enabled in 2022, a single midrange or high-end discrete GPU will suffice. Laptops can now play smoothly at 1440p thanks to the RTX 3070/3080, and the latter GPU in particular has enabled 4K gaming on laptops a lot more possible than previously.
High-end GPUs may even push ray-tracing to greater resolutions in some games thanks to a rendering technique known as DLSS. There are some games that may not be able to run at 60fps at 4K with ray tracing enabled, but with these top-end choices, it’s far more likely to be possible. If we get our hands on the RTX 3080 Ti, we’ll find just how much more powerful it is.
The Panel: How High a Refresh Rate to Get in a Gaming Laptop?
A RTX 3070 or RTX 3080 used to be considered overkill for gaming at 1080p, but that has changed thanks to a number of new reasons. High-refresh-rate screens are now expected in most gaming laptops, allowing for the full presentation of soaring frame rates to smooth out the perceived gaming. In order to reap the benefits of a high-refresh display in demanding games, you’ll need a powerful graphics card. You’ll be able to tell if a machine is a 120Hz, 144Hz, or 240Hz machine by its marketing jargon. In the near future, new gaming laptops will all have displays that run at speeds greater than 60Hz.

With more expensive versions, we’re seeing 240Hz and 360Hz possibilities as well, meaning they can display frames per second greater than 60 frames per second (for example, up to 144fps, in the case of 144Hz screens). This improves the visuals of the game, but only high-end GPUs are capable of doing so. It’s also important to note that ray tracing techniques (think real-time lighting and reflection effects) are extremely demanding to run, and as more video games integrate them, the more you’ll wish you could turn them on.
As a result, even if playing games at full HD (1080p) resolution doesn’t appear to be overly demanding to you on paper, you have several reasons to choose an RTX 3070 or 3080. When it comes to lower-end graphics cards, such as the RTX 3050, the DLSS technology can be used to run games or enable ray-tracing with little drawbacks. Even if support for DLSS isn’t universal, it’s becoming more commonplace.
The G-Sync and FreeSync technologies from Nvidia and AMD, on the other hand, are more practical. Improve the gaming experience and smooth out frame rates by allowing the laptop screen to rewrite the image onscreen at a variable rate that is dependent on the GPU’s performance (rather than the fixed rate of the screen). If you’re a fan of properly produced images, you should look for support for one of these technologies. When referred to as “adaptive sync,” these features are increasingly widespread, while G-Sync remains the standard for lower-priced laptops.
The Processor: Which CPU to Get in a Gaming Laptop?
During the spring of 2021, Intel released the first of their 11th Generation “Tiger Lake H” processors (commonly referred to as the “H35” class), followed by the rest of the more powerful chips. Almost no other CPUs will be available in Intel-based gaming laptops by the year 2021 save for these two. There will be a discussion on AMD later on.) However, Intel unveiled its 12th Generation “Alder Lake H” processors at CES 2022, and the gaming laptop industry is expected to be dominated by them this year. We initially tested this architecture on a powerful Core i9 processor in 2022, followed by the first review of an Alder Lake-H laptop in the Alienware x14.
For the time being, the majority of laptops in this section are powered by Core i9, Core i7, and Core i5 processors, with the exception of a few. Core i7 and i9 processors have at least eight cores and 16 threads, while the Core i7 and i9 processors have at least eight cores and 32 threads. As the year progresses, Alder Lake laptops will likely begin to take their place.

Despite the fact that raw core and thread counts are no longer as straightforward as they once were, Alder Lake’s upcoming Core i5 processors will have up to 12 cores and 16 thread. Intel will use its Performance Hybrid architecture, like it did with its popular Alder Lake desktop CPUs, which makes use of Efficiency cores and Performance cores (or E-cores and P-cores). That is not to suggest that the number of cores and threads is not helpful: The most powerful Core i9-12900HK processor will have 14 cores and 20 threads, with six P-cores and eight E-cores in each of the cores. The same core combination may be found in the Core i7-12800H, which is expected to be a popular processor. As soon as these chips arrive in 2022, we’ll put them through their paces on laptops.
However, gaming performance isn’t as critical as it is for multithreaded jobs like media projects, thus the Tiger Lake H family’s higher clock rates and more cores are a good fit. Gaming doesn’t get as much benefit from additional threads as other media jobs, but it doesn’t harm to have more of them around. By the end of 2021, the Intel Core i7-11800H, with its eight cores and 16 threads, was the standard for most high-end gaming laptops.
An Intel Core i3 processor on a gaming laptop is theoretically possible, although it is extremely rare: Many games can be played on systems with Intel Core i3 or AMD processors at a similar price point, but why stop there? However, if you must choose between a high-end CPU and a high-end GPU, go for the graphics. For example, if you can save money by obtaining a Core i5 processor instead of a Core i7, you should acquire an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 instead of an RTX 3060 graphics card. If gaming is your primary focus, it makes more sense to spend your money on the GPU than the CPU.
Core i5 and Core i7 processors are available in midrange laptops, with the latter two being found in high-end gaming machines. More powerful H-series chips tend to be found in higher-priced gaming laptops, while lower-power and more portable processors are found in more compact machines. They are quite different, in terms of thermal profile, as well as overall performance potential; a U-series Core i7 processor may not even have the same number of processing cores as an H-series Core i7 chip. (Intel has started using a “G” suffix on its U-Series chips in its 11th generation to denote the improved integrated graphics, but they are functionally still U-Series processors).

True gaming laptops with U-series processors are rare, but they do exist. H is superior. Even the most costly and largest gaming laptops will have Core i9 H-Series CPUs, which are excellent for media chores as well. Later this year, Alder Lake U-Series laptops will be released.
AMD’s times have changed recently. While Intel had previously dominated the market, AMD’s mobile versions of its Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7 processors were a long way behind. In terms of gaming laptops, Intel’s solutions are significantly more widespread, despite the fact that they offer their own performance advantages.
Since 2020, when AMD debuted its Zen 2 mobile CPUs alongside its desktop chips’ success, things have changed dramatically. We saw more AMD laptops in 2021 than in any other year, thanks to the 4000 Series and the Zen 3-based 5000 Series in 2021. For less money, you might have similar gaming and media performance with these CPUs as with Intel’s equivalents. In addition to the more powerful Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 5 processors, AMD now sells lower-end models.
Even if Alder Lake has the potential to reclaim CPU dominance on both laptop and desktop, AMD isn’t going to give up. The “Rembrandt” Ryzen 6000 Series, introduced by Team Red at CES 2022, will be available in laptops in February. You may check out our initial Ryzen 6000 Series testing findings and analysis here. For now, our top selections are Tiger Lake H and Ryzen 5000 laptops, but they will be superseded by Alder Lake H- and Rembrandt-based notebooks as we head towards 2022.
Display Size: What Screen Size to Get in a Gaming Laptop?
A laptop with a 15.6-inch screen is ideal for gaming, in terms of screen size. However, if you’re willing to shell out for a model with a 17-inch screen, you’ll have to compromise on portability. It’s less of a question when it comes to finding a solution: If the screen is smaller than 1024×768 pixels, a full HD (1,920×1,080-pixel) native-resolution screen is required.
The 14-inch and slightly larger-than-15-inch panel sizes, as well as 16-inch gaming laptop displays, will begin to appear on the market in 2022 as third and fourth classes, not merely as one-offs. There are 14-inch gaming laptops from the likes of Acer, Alienware, Asus, and Razer currently.
It’s possible to get larger displays with higher-than-1080p resolutions, but choose wisely, as a resolution of QHD (uncommon), QHD+ (3,200 by 1,800 pixels) and even 4K (3,840 by 2,160 pixels, a bit more common) will increase your final cost twice: first for the panel, and second for the higher-quality graphics chip you’ll need to drive it. For smoother images, seek for screens with G-Sync or high refresh rates (as noted before).

Gaming laptops with 4K screens (3,840 by 2,160 pixels) are still a rarity and a significant financial outlay because they necessitate the most powerful GPUs in order to play smoothly at native resolution. Also, remember the following: A 1080p screen may actually be a better use of your money if you only play games, as only the most powerful graphics cards can produce intricate animations at playable frame rates across the full screen at 4K. (particularly if you can also get a high refresh rate screen). Even though the RTX 3070 and RTX 3080 can handle 4K gaming much more reasonably than any laptop GPUs before them, we still don’t think it’s worth the cost to seek out 4K gaming in laptops. However, the screens do have a pleasing appearance, thanks in part to the prevalence of OLED displays.
Gaming Laptop Storage: Stick With an SSD
Since the price of solid-state drives has dropped significantly over the past few years, you should definitely go for a system with a solid-state drive as the boot drive. SSDs reduce the amount of time it takes to start up a computer, wake up from sleep, and load new levels of a game. Hard drives that serve as the boot drive are only seen in very old laptops or those that are extremely cheap.
Just make sure you set it up appropriately if you buy a gaming laptop with an SSD. This combination of an SSD with a spinning secondary hard drive (at least 1TB) is ideal if you occasionally download videos from the internet. In gaming laptops, only thicker models may accommodate a dual-drive configuration of this kind.) Although high-capacity SSDs (up to 1 TB) are available, the purchasing price of your gaming setup will rise dramatically. For a basic gaming laptop, a 512GB boot SSD is a fair compromise.
SSDs are lightning-fast, but when it comes to storage space, hard drives are a better value. Increasing the amount of storage on an SSD can have a significant impact on the pricing. The size of modern game downloads (in the hundreds of terabytes) should still be taken into consideration when shopping. Having to constantly move games on and off a little SSD can be a pain.
How Much Memory to Get in a Gaming Laptop?
Let’s talk about memory before we forget. A minimum of 8 GB of RAM is recommended for a gaming laptop. When it comes to actual models, you won’t find any that have anything less than the following: As a result, you won’t have to worry about running out of RAM when going back and forth between the game window and your messaging app, but we recommend saving your time spent researching gaming strategies for when you’re not playing.

It’s recommended that you have 16GB of RAM on a high-end computer, so that you can run a variety of programmes at once, including multiple gaming sessions. Even with 8GB of memory, a midrange gaming laptop should be able to run smoothly. However, many new laptops cannot be upgraded. Depending on how much memory you order, you can be stuck with it. At the very least, 16GB of RAM should be sufficient for a high-end gaming laptop. For the majority of people, more than that is overkill.
Buying the Best Cheap Gaming Laptop
If you’re on a tight budget and looking for a gaming system, you’re going to have to make some compromises. In order to get the most out of your laptop while staying within a reasonable price range, you’ll have to accept that some of its components won’t be equivalent to those found in more expensive computers. Although some buyers are willing to spend as much as $1,000 on a gaming laptop, you may find a good system for that price or even less. We’ve rounded up some of the best budget gaming laptops for you here.
The graphics will suffer the most, as the specialised graphics chip is one of the most expensive components in a computer and the most important factor in a computer’s gaming prowess. Laptop class is largely determined by the graphics chip, so keep an eye out for it when looking at different models. It’s fortunate that even today’s less powerful GPU options are capable.
Nvidia’s Turing GPUs like the GTX 1650, GTX 1650 Ti, and GTX 1660 Ti have been the primary choice for budget systems in the past. Laptops as low as $799 are now using the GeForce RTX 3050 and 3050 Ti instead. For the first time, budget gamers may now take advantage of the powerful ray-tracing lighting technology that is synonymous with the “RTX” trademark.
In certain new budget laptops or mainstream laptops that demand a discrete GPU, the GTX 16-Series will remain an option, but the two new RTX 30-Series GPUs should be expected in new 2022 computers.
It is possible to play at 1080p with the GTX 1650 and GTX 1650 Ti, but you will not be able to play newer games at the top settings with these cards. Even if you go with the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, you’ll have to compromise a little bit in order to get 60fps in some games, but that’s less of a concern if you go with 1080p/full HD. It’s significantly less of a problem with the RTX 3060.
While the GTX 1660 Ti is currently the most affordable mobile GPU capable of supporting virtual reality gaming, several laptops at the higher end of this price range can get you started.

Processing power is the second most significant factor. If you don’t obtain the quicker Core i7, you’re likely to receive a more capable Core i5. Even yet, the advantages of an i7 system for gaming are outweighed by the benefits of an i5 machine for video editing and other creative tasks. Fast and efficient at the base level, this generation of processors won’t be a bottleneck for gaming. Aside from some high-end or ultra-portable gaming systems, we’ve seen more Ryzen CPUs in general-purpose laptops than gaming laptops in the past year.
Compared to Nvidia GPUs, AMD GPUs are less prevalent in cheap gaming laptops. On the overall, there haven’t been as many new ones in the previous several years that use the Radeon RX 5500M or 5600M combined with an Intel CPU. (The MSI Bravo 15 is a notable exception.) More all-AMD laptops are available than ever before, but not all are gaming devices and not all are budget-friendly.
The rest of the components, except from the graphics card and processor, should be closer to more expensive PCs than you’d think. In terms of storage, the gap between hard drives and SSDs is shrinking, but hard drives remain more tenacious in this gaming-laptop class than in other classes. We greatly prefer an SSD boot drive, even in this price category, so be on the lookout for laptops with only a 1TB hard disc and a small SSD boot drive alongside. A 1080p display is almost certain, as 1,366×768 panels are now reserved for low-cost non-gaming computers. Budget laptops typically have 8GB of RAM, although you can find some (16GB laptops) in this price bracket if you look hard enough.
What Else Do You Need to Up Your Game?
Don’t expect to take any of these gaming systems far from a power source very often because high-end components reduce battery life. In addition to cutting-edge connectors like USB Type-C and Thunderbolt 3, look for at least two USB 3.0 Type-A ports so you can plug in an external mouse and a hard drive for your saved media files.
To use a VR headset with a GeForce GTX 1660 Ti or better, you’ll need to find the right ports. There should be enough USB ports to accommodate a probable hydra-head of cabling, as well as an HDMI or DisplayPort video out (depending on the headset). However, if you want to play games on an external monitor, you don’t need additional video connectors such as DisplayPort or mini-DisplayPort (which are occasionally implemented over a USB-C port).
So, Which Gaming Laptop Should I Buy?

Because of the silicon shortages and supply-chain concerns that have plagued the industry since the pandemic began, the budget class has also seen some price inflation through 2021 into 2022. While budget gaming PCs were previously limited to $999, we’re witnessing price increases at the lower end of the market. So, we’ve raised the price limit for this type of gaming equipment.
