ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan’s foreign minister said on Thursday that water levels had dropped by almost half in the country’s worst-hit southern Sindh province, giving farmers hope that they would be able to seed wheat and begin the process of getting their lives back to normal.

At a press conference, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari announced that the water level in Sindh had reduced by 50 percent, with 400,000 people now sheltering in makeshift shelters.

Hundreds of thousands of farmers were relieved by Bhutto-comments Zardari’s because they alleviated their anxiety about planting the next wheat crop, which typically begins in October.

Officials estimate that this year’s flooding in Pakistan destroyed 15% of the country’s rice harvest, 40% of its cotton crop, and the year-round food supply for thousands of rural households.

Climate change was a contributing factor in the devastating flooding that impacted 33 million people, killed roughly 1,700, destroyed over 2 million dwellings, and cost an estimated $30 billion.

Ukrainian membership in the European Union has the backing of European leaders.

During a visit to Kyiv on Thursday, European leaders expressed their support for Ukraine’s EU membership quest.

While Russia’s invasion of Ukraine progressed, leaders from France, Germany, Italy, and Romania met with President Volodymyr Zelensky at Kyiv’s Presidential Palace.

During President Macron’s stop in Ukraine, Chancellor Scholz of Germany, Prime Minister Draghi of Italy, and President Iohannis of Romania all voiced their support for Ukraine’s membership in the European Union.

Evening Standard has provided this.

Mr. Macron stated that he and his EU counterparts support Ukraine’s application for “immediate” candidate status. He has earlier predicted that Ukraine’s membership application may take many decades.

After lengthy negotiations, Mr. Macron pledged an additional six strong truck-mounted artillery cannons on top of the 12 it has already committed.

As the conflict in the eastern Donbas area drags on, this is the latest in a series of fresh military commitments from the West for Ukraine.

Mr. Macron said at a press conference that the leaders “are doing everything so that Ukraine alone can decide its path.”

Mr. Scholz, for his part, has stated that Ukraine and Moldova are a part of the European family but must still fulfil conditions for membership.

The German government, he said, would keep providing financial and military aid to Ukraine for as long as it was required.

Mr. Draghi also stated that the Ukrainian people, in their battle against the Russian invasion, were defending the ideals of democracy and freedom that are the basis of the European project.

At the Met Gala, Kim Kardashian allegedly ruined a Marilyn Monroe outfit.

A.F.P. – 16 June

1k

Monroe memorabilia collector claims on Wednesday that the private institution that owns the classic garment let it to be “permanently destroyed” when it was leased to reality star Kim Kardashian for her appearance at the Met Gala spectacular last month.

When a platinum-blonde Kim Kardashian wore Marilyn Monroe’s iconic skintight dress from their 1962 performance of “Happy Birthday, Mr. President!” for John F. Kennedy, she caused quite a fuss.

In May of 2022, Kim Kardashian attends the Met Gala in New York City while dressed as Marilyn Monroe.

By May of 2022, Kim Kardashian has worn Marilyn Monroe’s outfit at the Met Gala in New York.

To the attention of: Dimitrios Kambouris

This week, Monroe collector and operator of an all-encompassing website Scott Fortner unveiled before and after shots of the crystal-studded cream dress.

These after images were taken by Fortner’s buddy who happened to see the outfit on display at Ripley’s Believe It or Not! on a Sunday. where the garment is kept and where Kardashian was given permission to wear it in Los Angeles.

Some crystals are missing and others are only attached by a thread, as shown in the comparison images, and there appear to be minor rips in the fabric around the hooks that tied the garment together.

Ripley’s has come under fire on social media for allegedly damaging a gown it just purchased at auction for a record $4.8 million.

As Fortner explained in an Instagram post from earlier today, “I blame Ripley’s, as they authorised the garment to be worn.”

“I think any famous person who was given the opportunity to wear this clothing would take it,” he remarked. Obviously, Kim K. was the lucky one to get to wear it, but there must be a good reason why someone would want to wear it.

Fortner said that no matter who wore it, irreparable damage had been done.

Ripley’s did not react to AFP’s inquiry regarding the allegations on Wednesday.

Ripley’s said Kardashian will be donning the garment in early May.

The firm stated that “great care was taken to preserve this piece of history,” adding that it had sought the advice of “garment conservationists,” “appraisers,” “archivists,” and “insurance.”

Despite widespread reports that Kardashian underwent extreme weight loss in order to fit into the iconic dress, she has yet to address the claims on her social media platforms.

EU eyes Israeli natural gas in deal with Egypt

Jun 15

EU nations seeking to reduce their reliance on Russian gas because of the war in Ukraine may soon be able to source supplies from Israel instead.

The framework deal will allow Israeli liquefied natural gas (LNG) to be shipped to Europe

On Wednesday, the EU, Israel and Egypt signed a provisional natural gas export deal at an energy conference in Cairo.

The Israeli gas is expected to be sent to liquefaction plants in Egypt, then shipped north to markets in Europe.

Israel’s energy ministry said it would allow significant exports of Israeli gas to Europe for the first time.

Under the framework agreement, the EU will also encourage European companies to take part in Israeli and Egyptian exploration tenders, the ministry said.

Officials said exports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Europe were likely to rise under the deal, but it would probably take a couple of years before shipments could be expanded.

The EU imported about 40% of its gas from Russia last year and is expected to remain a big gas consumer until about 2030.

After that, it will seek to use less gas, with the aim of achieving zero-emission status by 2050.

The memorandum of understanding was signed by Israel’s Energy Minister, Karine Elharrar, along with Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum, Tarek El Molla, and the EU’s Energy Commissioner, Kadri Simson.

“Today Egypt and Israel make a commitment to share our natural gas with Europe and to help with the energy crisis,” said Ms Elharrar afterwards.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who was also there, described it as “a big step forward in the energy supply to Europe”.

“I see it as a first step leading to a Mediterranean-wide agreement, because I see that the energy supplies, [which] were mostly traditionally in the northern part, now are shifting towards the global south and east,” she added.

Buffalo shooting suspect charged with hate crimes

The gunman accused of killing 10 people in an upstate New York supermarket has been charged with hate crimes by the US justice department.

Authorities believe that suspect Payton Gendron, 18, was motivated by racial hatred. Almost all the victims in the shooting were black.

He now faces 26 federal hate crime and firearms charges, some of which carry the possibility of the death penalty.

Mr Gendron has pleaded not guilty to separate state charges.

According to the federal criminal complaint released on Wednesday, Mr Gendron’s “motive for the mass shooting was to prevent black people from replacing white people”.

The complaint also alleges that he hoped to “inspire others to commit similar attacks”.

A total of 13 people were shot in 14 May shooting. Three of them survived.

Following the incident, authorities said the accused gunman drove more than 320km (200 miles) to a predominantly black neighbourhood in Buffalo – New York’s second-largest city – with the specific intention of ending “as many black lives as possible”.

A manifesto believed to be written by the alleged attacker, in which he describes himself as both a fascist and a white supremacist, also emerged in the wake of the shooting.

The new charges against Mr Gendron include 10 counts of hate crime resulting in death, three counts involving bodily injury, and 10 counts of use of a firearm to commit murder and in relation to a violent crime.

He also faces three counts of use and discharge of a firearm during a violent crime.

The suspected gunman faces separate domestic terrorism and murder charges filed by New York State. He has remained in custody since the shooting.

It is believed to be the first time that a New York domestic terrorism law enacted in 2020 is being used against a defendant.

The announcement of the new charges comes on the same day that Attorney General Merrick Garland is scheduled to travel to the site of the shooting and meet with the families of victims.

The Buffalo shooting, together with another recent mass shooting at a primary school in Uvalde, Texas that left 21 people dead, has led to renewed calls for stricter gun control measures in the US.
