With cryptocurrency and Ethereum miners still stealing GPUs and continued supply chain issues, competitively priced graphics cards look to be out of reach.

Except for the Radeon RX 6500 XT, GeForce RTX 3050, and Intel Arc Alchemist, you might want to look for the Radeon RX 6500 XT, GeForce RTX 3050, or Intel Arc Alchemist. Despite the fact that the first two are currently available (and sold out), AMD and Nvidia have theoretical MSRPs of $199 and $249, respectively. Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3080 incorporates the new and improved Ampere architecture. It’s more than 30% faster than the previous generation 2080 Ti and allegedly $500 less expensive. The new RTX 3080 Ti was unable to replace the incumbent because to its substantially higher price. This is the card to get if you’re serious about maxing out all graphics settings and playing at 4K or 1440p – it’s normally overkill for 1080p gaming, although enabling all ray tracing effects in games that allow it makes 1080p still doable.

If you missed out on the first set of RTX GPUs, the RTX 30-series might be just what you need to get on board the ray tracing train. The RTX 3080 is your best alternative for playing ray traced games without breaking the bank, with potentially double the ray tracing speed of Turing and titles like Cyberpunk 2077 utilising even more ray tracing effects.

Ampere also incorporates improved DLSS tensor cores, a technique that will almost surely emerge in future games now that it does not require per-game training by a supercomputer. We’re seeing a lot more games utilising DLSS 2.0 these days, which is facilitated by the fact that it’s only a toggle and UI update in Unreal Engine and Unity to get it working. Nvidia’s RT and DLSS performance is also substantially faster than AMD’s new RX 6000 cards, which is fortunate given Nvidia sometimes falls behind in traditional rasterization speed (which is what our raw numbers are based on).

The RTX 3080’s most difficult part will be finding one in stock at a fair price. For example, the average eBay price over the last month has been more over $1,440. However, considering the higher prices of the 3080 Ti and 3090, this is our current top pick for a fast GPU.

For Team Red, AMD’s Radeon RX 6800 XT is the top card. RX Radeon 6900 XT is technically faster, but it costs more than five times more. In light of the fact that you won’t be receiving any additional VRAM or bonuses, that’s a poor offer. The RX 6800 XT is a major improvement over the previous generation RX 5700 XT in terms of performance and functionality. On average, it’s a whopping 70-90 percent quicker, plus it supports ray tracing (through DirectX Raytracing or VulkanRT).

Before its release, the GPU was called “Big Navi” by the enthusiast community because of its impressive performance. There are twice as many shader cores and RAM in Navi 21 as there were in Navi 10. There’s also a 300 MHz bump to the highest clock speeds we’ve ever seen on a standard GPU, which range from 2.1-2.3 GHz (depending on the card model). The RX 6800 XT has a TDP of 300W, which is somewhat lower than the RTX 3080’s 320W TDP. AMD managed all this without significantly raising the power needs.

The enormous 128MB Infinity Cache is responsible for a significant portion of AMD’s speed. It has a 119 percent increase in effective bandwidth (according to AMD). As far as we know, very few games will require more than 16GB in the near future, and so the 6800 XT is in a strong position in that regard.

What could possibly go wrong? The ray tracing performance, on the other hand, is only passable. Because current games are more likely to benefit from Nvidia’s RTX GPUs, the 6800 XT is only just ahead of the RTX 3070 in ray-tracing performance, and it can fall behind by as much as 25% in some games. Without DLSS, which even in Quality mode can increase the performance of RTX cards by 20% to 40%. (sometimes more). Because of this, AMD is developing FidelityFX Super Resolution, although it hasn’t been ready to compete with DLSS.

As with all current GPUs, the price and availability are still awful. Last month, the RX 6800 XT sold for an average of over $1,200 on eBay. While the RTX 3080 is technically superior, it costs nearly twice as much as AMD’s MSRP.

As far as some people are concerned, speed is the most important factor when it comes to choosing a credit card. An Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 is designed for this type of user. The RTX 3080 costs more than twice as much as the RTX 3080, yet its performance is only marginally better (10-15 percent) in most applications. To sum it up, it’s the Titan RTX at an even higher price. That’s OK if you’re looking for a deal, but the 12GB RTX 3080 Ti doesn’t make a significant dent in the pricing.

For the time being, the RTX 3090 is expected to be Nvidia’s most powerful GPU. There isn’t much place for a new Titan card because it has a practically complete GA102 chip based on the Ampere architecture. According to Nvidia, the 3090 offers Titan-class performance and features to the GeForce brand (particularly the 24GB VRAM). The RTX 3090 is your only option if you must have the fastest graphics card on the market. However, the average price on eBay last month was over $2,300, so be prepared to spend a hefty price if you want to get one right now.

Of course, it’s not just about video games. There is only one GeForce Ampere with NVLink compatibility available for professional applications and GPU computation, and that is the RTX 3090. Other multimedia creation programmes benefit from the GDDR6X’s 24GB of memory. When comparing the 3080 to the Titan RTX, for example, Blender frequently showed a 30% increase in performance, whereas the Titan RTX was twice as fast. Just beware of lower-than-expected performance in some SPECviewperf 13 apps because Titan RTX has additional features enabled in its drivers that aren’t enabled for GeForce cards.

AMD’s RX 6900 XT is a direct competitor to the RTX 3090 and is competitive in traditional rasterization. Several SPECviewperf tests show it to be the winner as well. However, if you’re looking for the fastest graphics card on the market right now, go no further than Nvidia, especially if you plan on using ray tracing and DLSS. As of late this month, though, the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti is expected to take the performance crown, thanks to faster clock speeds and more GPU cores.

It looks like Nvidia’s Ampere march just got a lot better. There is no difference in performance between the 30-series GeForce RTX 3060 Ti and other 30-series models. Of course, this is only true in principle, as it was immediately outsold by all other new graphics cards. At the moment, the typical eBay price is approximately $850, which is more than twice the minimum MSRP.. <Sigh>

The 3060 Ti outperforms the previous generation 2080 Super in every test we conducted. The 3070 is only 9% slower than the 3070, but it costs 20% less. When compared to a GTX series or equivalent GPU, like a GTX 1070 or RX Vega 56, the 3060 Ti is up to twice as fast—sometimes even more—in the most recent games.

The absence of VRAM is the only serious issue. For the time being, 8GB of RAM is sufficient, although certain games are beginning to exceed that limit. It’s possible to lower the quality of the texture, but you’ll be left with a nagging feeling of regret if you do so. It’s hard to tell the difference between a high and hyper setting.

However, Nvidia’s 3060 Ti remains faster than AMD’s RX 6600 and RX 6600 XT, especially in ray-tracing games. Although it is now $250 cheaper than the 3060 Ti, that doesn’t mean you should pay that much for either card. It’s impossible to find a competitor for the 3060 Ti’s $399 price tag. Compared to the 2060 Super, it’s 35-45 percent faster, while the RX 5700 XT is 25-30 percent faster.

Right now, the most pressing worry is locating a card like this for sale. For the non-LHR models of the 3070, mining performance matches that of AMD’s current generation cards, which implies that prices are still inflated. For one thing, 8GB of RAM is a bit meagre, especially when you consider that the GTX 1070 had as much memory back in 2013.

8GB VRAM feels stingy

RTX 3070 graphics cards are the latest in a long line of cards based on the next-generation Turing architecture. Compared to AMD’s RX 6800 series, this is a significant step backwards from the 3080. While AMD’s new cards are faster and have better ray tracing capabilities, the 3070 is also less expensive and still has DLSS. All of the 3070 cards have sold out at or near the suggested retail price. Our recommendation is to remain with the non-Ti RTX 3070 for the time being because it offers slightly higher performance for $100 more, but it also consumes 30% more power.

To put it another way, the 3070’s $400 price tag makes the 3060 Ti less appealing. In principle, it’s 10-12 percent faster, but it costs 25% more. Last month, the 3070 Ti sold for an average of $1,050 on eBay, $150 more than the 3060 Ti. In the grand scheme of things, the extra $100–$175 isn’t a significant deal, but that much money would ordinarily buy the fastest non-Titan GPU. If you’re building a new gaming PC, don’t spend more than $300 unless it has an Ampere or Big Navi GPU. There is, nevertheless, a scepticism on our part.

Even while 1440p and 4K gaming are both viable, 4K at its highest quality often slips below 60 fps at its best settings. For 4K games, even with DLSS, the frame rate drops to around 40-50 fps. The 8GB of GDDR6 is also a source of concern. Not only is there less memory on a smaller bus, but the 3080 is also running at a lower clock speed. A few games have already shown that 8GB isn’t enough to run at full resolution, and it’s just going to grow worse in the future. To make matters worse for Nvidia, AMD added 16GB of RAM on its Navi 21 GPUs, while Nvidia pushed the RTX 3060 and 3060 Ti to 12GB of RAM, making their 8GB of RAM look even worse.

The 3060 Ti is your best bet if you’re on a tight budget and need a powerful Nvidia GPU. With an extra $100, you can buy the 3070, which then leads to the 3070 Ti, and at that point why not purchase the 3080? It is, after all, the best all-around card. Looking at expensive cards and the law of diminishing returns is an issue. It’s now possible to get into an RTX 2080 Ti for a fraction of the price you’d previously had to pay.

AMD’s Navi 22 and the RX 6700 XT are the result of cutting down the various functional parts of the Navi 21 GPU to make a smaller die that can be sold at a lower price. With the same number of GPU cores, but slightly higher clock rates and greater cache, it improves performance by around 25% compared to the previous generation RX 5700 XT (at higher settings and resolutions, at least).

During gaming sessions, AMD’s RX 6700 XT reaches a maximum clock speed of 2.5GHz, which is the fastest we’ve ever observed on a GPU at stock, on the reference card. We were able to get speeds of 2.7-2.8GHz with a little tweaking and overclocking without damaging the GPU. Even though it only has 2,560 GPU cores, it’s still a lot of power.

The RX 6700 XT and the RTX 3070 and RTX 3060 Ti go head-to-head in our performance tests. Because it’s a little bit quicker and a little bit slower than the previous, the $479 price tag seems reasonable. The 6700 XT, on the other hand, begins to appear more and more like a 3060 Ti competition when we add games that use DLSS or ray-tracing.

The fundamental problem, as with everything else, is the same. Even at astronomically inflated rates, the RX 6700 XT quickly sells out. On eBay, the card is currently selling for approximately $775. Better than the 3060 Ti, but still more than we’d advocate paying for a $500 high-end offering that should ostensibly cost that much.

This is essentially the same GPU that powers the Radeon RX 6800 XT, but it’s been shaved down to a more manageable form factor. Only 96 ROPs and somewhat lower clock speeds are provided, however the 16GB GDDR6 and 128MB Infinity Cache remain fully functional. Even though it’s a fair trade-off, we prefer the 6800 XT in the end (unless pricing eventually drops a bit more on the vanilla cards).

Currently, the RX 6800 sells for $1,033 on eBay, which is roughly $140 less than the 6800 XT and a little more than the 3070 Ti’s list price. Is it even necessary to point out how outrageous such prices are? In terms of overall performance, the RX 6800 topped Nvidia’s RTX 3070 by 12 percent, and it also beat the 3070 Ti by 5 percent, excluding ray tracing or DLSS, of course.

The ray tracing performance of Nvidia’s previous generation RTX 2080 Super appears to be mediocre. As an alternative to DLSS, AMD’s FSR is an option, although it isn’t widely utilised and can’t match DLSS image quality. It’s already 12 percent quicker than the 6800 in ray tracing performance at native rendering, but when DLSS Quality mode is on, the difference widens to greater than 50 percent.

Even though AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) is now available, Nvidia GPUs can also take use of it, thanks to AMD’s FidelityFX. We’d rather buy an RX 6800 for its rasterization abilities than its ray tracing capabilities. But honestly, we’d wait for the price of this particular card to drop to a fair level, say $600 or less. However, RDNA 3 and Lovelace are more likely to appear first.

We may have gone too far with Nvidia’s desktop Ampere line as we near the bottom of the pricing and performance spectrum. It has a 192-bit memory interface and 12GB of VRAM, which is a significant improvement over the RTX 3050 but a significant drop from the GA104. Only the RTX 2070 can match the 3060 Ti in terms of total performance, with 26% less GPU cores and 26% less memory bandwidth. So, two and a half years later, a $330 graphics card can now compete with a $500 graphics card.

In theory, at least. We’re seeing RTX 3060 12GB cards selling on eBay for over $625 because demand has once again outstripped availability. Despite Nvidia’s efforts to reduce Ethereum mining performance by half, which were rendered irrelevant when Nvidia hacked its own drivers (on accident). It is apparent that miners are still utilising the cards even after the firmware was upgraded to “fix” the mining lock.

In terms of VRAM, the 3060 12GB isn’t a problem, and there are a few occasions when it comes close to the 3060 Ti in performance. If you can get one for a fair price, the 3060 Ti is still the best option if you can afford it.

Despite having the same amount of VRAM, AMD’s Radeon RX 6700 XT outperforms the competition thanks to its massive 96MB Infinity Cache, but it also costs a lot more. If you’re looking for a better offer right now, AMD’s RX 6600 XT with slightly better non-ray tracing performance and a $5 price cut (on eBay) might be a better option.

In terms of raw performance, the RTX 3060 is essentially equivalent to AMD’s RX 5700 XT, even after 18 months. There isn’t much to excite the masses about this, but that is to be expected in the mainstream. We can only hope that supply and pricing return to their normal levels as soon as possible.

With the Navi 23 architecture, AMD has a solution to the RTX 3060. For the RX 6700 non-XT, AMD lowered CU counts, memory interface width, and Infinity Cache sizes in order to make the chip smaller and more affordable while still delivering excellent performance.

Even with the memory bus halved to only 128 bits, the RX 5700 XT manages to outperform its predecessor in terms of performance. The 8GB of VRAM of the RTX 3060 is a fair concern, however there are some situations where the RTX 3060 is the preferable option. When you consider the memory bandwidth, it’s still astonishing how much even a 32MB Infinity Cache seems to improve performance. As the name suggests, this is a smaller version of Navi 10 that utilises the same TSMC N7 node to produce 10–15% higher frames per second in 1080p.

However, ray tracing is one of the areas where it has difficulty. At 1080p, some of the games that we tested didn’t even manage 20 frames per second with DXR (DirectX Raytracing). When Nvidia’s RTX 3060 didn’t use DLSS, it was nearly twice as fast as its rival (where available). Neither AMD nor Nvidia — or even Intel — GPUs benefit from FSR’s performance improvement, so it doesn’t fix the problem. The RX 6600 XT feels like a disappointment in comparison to the other Big Navi processors.

To be fair, AMD’s $379 beginning pricing for the Radeon RX 5600XT ($279 launch price) isn’t exactly a selling factor, either. In addition, the RX 6600 XT is now completely out of stock in retail locations, and the price on eBay is at least 50% higher than it was when it first went on sale.

This is the polar opposite of a Navi 21. The RX 6900 XT raises performance slightly while increasing the (theoretical) price by nearly 50% compared to the 6800. To put it another way, you’re paying a lot of money for very little return (the one saving grace of the RTX 3090). Good luck finding one for less than $1,400 at the moment.

The RX 6900 XT was AMD’s best effort yet. Its rarity can be explained in part by the fact that it has a fully functional Navi 21 GPU. As a result, AMD may be better suited creating more Zen 3 CPUs or console processors rather than attempting to produce Big Navi in large quantities. However, even as an Ethereum mining solution, the RX 6800 matches it in terms of hashing power.

Red flags such as poor raytracing performance and lack of an immediate replacement for DLSS are still present. When it comes to the implementation of DLSS, Nvidia has a three-year advantage over the rest of the industry. To summarise, Nvidia remains the clear choice for anyone looking for the finest RT experience available right now (not that you need RT to enjoy games).

The 6900 XT is still the fastest AMD GPU for those who only care about speed. Assuming you don’t mean mining performance, in which case the older Radeon VII is still superior by more than 35%. This item is likewise being sold at exorbitant costs right now.)

Nearing the $200 mark (kind of), the only options are the GeForce GTX 1660 Super, the vanilla GeForce GTX 1660, the Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB, or the brand-new Radeon RX 6500 XT model. In our tests, we found that the GTX 1660 Super is 15% quicker than the ordinary version of this card, and roughly 20% faster than the RX 5500 xt 8GB, which is 20% faster than the 6500 xt. To put it another way, we strongly recommend that you fork over the extra cash for a performance boost. Of course we would buy one if you could find a 1660 Super for less than $230. On the other hand, spending more than $400 on a GTX 1660 Super is not a fantastic deal.

Aside from our conclusion that Nvidia’s graphics card is superior to AMD’s in a head-to-head comparison, we also think the GTX 1660 Super is superior. Our initial impressions of these cards were that they were even better, but the rising cost of those cards has made them less appealing to us these days. The RX 6500 XT and RTX 3050 are expected to outperform the 1660 Super in terms of performance. Maybe. The answer will be revealed later this month, so stay tuned.

This chip’s power consumption is virtually equal to AMD’s Navi 14 processors built with TSMC 7nm FinFET, despite the use of TSMC 12nm FinFET. Even though Nvidia is employing an earlier manufacturing node, they are faster and use the same amount of electricity. The GTX 1660 Super has essentially the same performance as the GTX 1070, but in a more efficient design, for a price of $230. Turing NVENC makes it an excellent candidate for streaming video, as well.

GTX 1660 Super’s biggest disadvantage is that Ampere and RDNA 2 cards are now in the $250 price bracket. Depending on how long the shortages last, they may or may not be able to. If you’re in the market for a new graphics card, the GTX 1660 Super is a great option, but the current market conditions make it difficult to make a decision.

Even in the low-cost GPU market, we’re already one generation behind the freshest and greatest thanks to the arrival of Ampere and RDNA 2. There was a long period of time when the RX 570 4GB was retailing for about $120-$130, but now the GTX 1650 Super has taken its place. The 1650 Super is 30 percent more powerful while consuming significantly less electricity. Moreover, it’s more expensive than the 570 — or at least, it used to be more expensive than the 570 — as it appears AMD card supply have finally dried up.

Budget GPUs are not exempt from the current shortages, which is unfortunate if cost is your primary concern. The 1650 Super used to sell for $150-$160, but today it’s nearly impossible to locate one for less than $250. There have been a number of different GPUs (such as the RX 5500 XT 8GB) that have seen their prices soar that they are now competing with the similarly priced GTX 1660 Super. We’d be wary of buying a secondhand RX 570 4GB card on eBay for $190 right now.

Nvidia’s inclusion of the latest NVENC hardware on the 1650 Super is greatly appreciated. So, if you’re looking for a low-cost PC that can stream games like CSGO or League of Legends, this is a good option. Even in our COVID-infected environment, video conferencing apps are becoming increasingly popular. Just keep in mind that the 1650 Super requires a 6-pin power connector, unlike the previous generation GTX 1050 cards.

The GTX 1650 Super and RX 5500 XT 4GB are virtually neck-and-neck. In terms of performance and power, they’re almost exactly the same, and the prices here are just as messed up as they are everywhere There’s a case to be made for buying a used GTX 970 for less money, but you’ll be receiving a very old GPU and who knows what it’s gone through. Even though the RX 6500 XT is an option, the older Navi 14 GPU is faster at high resolution settings and costs the same as the newer RX 6500 XT.

Although the RX 5500 XT is capable of running any game at 1080p and medium to high resolution at 60 fps, it does not. In our opinion, this graphics card should cost no more than $150, so if you can hold off on upgrading for the time being, you should. There is plenty of room to explore with visual quality on the 5500 XT, which averaged over 60 frames per second in our testing at 1080p medium resolution.

For $450 and $270, we’re still not seeing anything that truly qualifies as a “affordable” solution for RTX 3050 and RX 6500 XT, which should have made prior generation cards redundant.

How We Test the Best Graphics Cards

It’s best to eliminate as many bottlenecks as possible before trying to figure out a graphics card’s raw performance. Core i9-12900K, MSI Z690 DDR4 motherboard, 32GB Corsair DDR4-3600 CL16 memory, and a Crucial P5 Plus 2TB SSD are the components of our 2022 graphics card testbed. A Cooler Master power supply, case, and CPU cooler complete the setup.

For the three most common gaming resolutions, 1080p, 1440p, and 4K, we used “medium” and “extreme” settings. Reference cards such as the Founders Edition versions from Nvidia and the reference designs from AMD are used wherever possible for all of these tests. However, most mid-range and lower GPUs lack reference versions, and in some cases we only have factory overclocked cards for testing. As a rule, we select cards that are as near to the reference specifications as possible when possible.

We use the same set of tests for all of the graphics cards in our lab. In order to get the GPU “warmed up” before running the tests, we perform each benchmark at least twice, once for each configuration and resolution combination. Generally speaking, if the two runs are within 0.5 percent of each other, we use the quicker of the two times. At a minimum, we repeat the test at least twice if the difference is more than a few percentage points.

It’s also important to look at all the data and look for any abnormalities, so for example, 3070 Ti, 3070, and 3060 Ti all normally perform in the same range of around 5% quicker than each other. A noticeable outlier (i.e. performance is more than 10% higher for the cards just described) will prompt us to retest and determine the “right” outcome for any cards that indicate anomalies.

Due to the amount of time it takes to thoroughly test each GPU, new drivers and game updates are inevitable. We retest a few sample cards every few months to make sure our results are still accurate, and if they aren’t, we retest the affected games and GPUs (s). This year, we may add games to our testing arsenal if we find an engaging and useful game to use as a benchmark. We’ll keep an eye out for such a game.

Choosing Among the Best Graphics Cards

For the top graphics cards, we’ve included a dozen possibilities, knowing that there is a lot of overlap. This series of graphics cards includes Nvidia’s Ampere cards and AMD’s RDNA2 devices. Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3090, GeForce RTX 3080 Ti, GeForce RTX 3080, GeForce RTX 3070 Ti, GeForce RTX 3070, GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, GeForce RTX 3060, and GeForce RTX 3050 launch reviews may be found here, as can AMD’s Radeon RX 6900 XT, Radeon RX 6800 XT

As of this writing, we have a dozen new GPUs to look forward to, including the RTX 3090 Ti and Intel Arc Alchemist. The launch window for Arc is now set for “Q1-2022,” but it could arrive later. Since all three cards support DirectX 12 Ultimate (as well as ray tracing) and contain tensor core hardware on the Arc and RTX cards, they’re a no-brainer.

We’ve compiled a list of the top graphics cards currently available on the speculative market, along with a rough estimate of their actual cost. There are two examples of this problem: the GeForce RTX 3060 12GB and the Radeon RX 6700 XT are both selling on eBay for much more than the retail price of $635 and $780, respectively (SEP). It’s possible to justify paying 25% more for a new GPU than the MSRP, but double or triple that amount is simply too much. We recommend looking into pre-built gaming PCs if you need to upgrade. Alternatively, you can wait, but prices may not return to a “normal” level until the end of 2022. (if then).

In theory, GPUs like the RTX 3070 and RX 6800 cost half as much as the RTX 2080 Ti of the previous generation while offering performance that is on par with or better than that of the previous generation. There’s a reason why the 2080 Ti is so expensive: The RX 6800 XT and the RTX 3080 are 30-35% faster than the 2080 Ti, while the 3090 is 10%-20% faster than the 3080 — at more than twice the price! If you’d like, you may examine how the RTX 3080 performs on a variety of CPUs. Hint: You’ll want a recent model with at least six cores and twelve threads, and anything with eight or more cores will give you a few more percentage points of performance.

Cryptocurrency mining and an already limited supply have produced a significant increase in GPU pricing, thus this is only true in principle. If you want to save money, don’t pay extra for old technology. You’ll soon be able to get an RTX 30-series or RX 6000-series graphics card at a price similar to the actual MSRP. Stay with your current graphics card, or sell it for a profit and put the money away until the price drops (assuming you have a spare you can live with in the interim). So why not wait for Lovelace and RDNA3, which are expected to come in late 2022 and will hopefully have greater availability (don’t bank on that yet)?

It’s impossible to ignore the CPU if your primary purpose is gaming. The finest gaming GPU will do you little good if your CPU is weak or outdated. All of these factors have been taken into account while developing our current GPU recommendations. However, price, features, and efficiency are still taken into account when ranking the GPUs, so in certain circumstances a somewhat slower card may actually be placed higher. There’s been a lot of movement at the top of the performance rankings, and these are the greatest graphics cards available right now, assuming you can find them.

Additional Shopping Tips

Consider these factors before you buy a graphics card:
When buying a graphics card, consider the following:

• Resolution: The more pixels you’re pushing, the more performance you need. You don’t need a top-of-the-line GPU to game at 1080p.
• PSU: Make sure that your power supply has enough juice and the right 6- and/or 8-pin connector(s). For example, Nvidia recommends a 550-watt PSU for the RTX 3060, and you’ll need at least an 8-pin connector and possibly a 6-pin PEG connector as well.
• Video Memory: A 4GB card is the minimum right now, 6GB models are better, and 8GB or more is strongly recommended. A few games can now use 12GB of VRAM, though they’re the exception rather than the rule.
• FreeSync or G-Sync? Either variable refresh rate technology will synchronize your GPU’s frame rate with your screen’s refresh rate. Nvidia supports G-Sync and G-Sync Compatible displays (for recommendations, see our Best Gaming Monitors list), while AMD’s FreeSync tech works with Radeon cards.
• Ray Tracing, DLSS, and FSR: The latest graphics cards support ray tracing, which can be used to enhance the visuals. DLSS provides intelligent upscaling and anti-aliasing to boost performance with similar image quality, but it’s only on Nvidia RTX cards. AMD’s FSR works on virtually any GPU and also provides upscaling and enhancement, but on a different subset of games.
A higher resolution means you’ll require more processing power. At 1080p, you don’t need a high-end graphics card.
It’s important to make sure that you’ve got the proper 6- and 8-pin connector on your power supply (s). A 550-watt PSU is recommended for the Nvidia RTX 3060, and you’ll need an 8-pin and perhaps a 6 pin PEG connector.
In terms of video memory, a 4GB card is the very least; 6GB cards are better, while 8GB cards or more are highly recommended. A select few games can now make use of all 12GB of VRAM, but this is still the exception, not the rule.
• G-Sync or FreeSync? Using either variable refresh rate technology, your GPU’s frame rate will be synchronised with the refresh rate of your screen. AMD’s FreeSync technology works with Radeon cards, whereas Nvidia offers G-Sync and G-Sync Compatible displays (for recommendations, see our list of the Best Gaming Monitors).
It’s possible to enhance the aesthetics with ray tracing, which is supported by some of the most recent graphics cards. DLSS delivers intelligent upscaling and anti-aliasing to enhance speed while maintaining the same image quality, but only on Nvidia RTX cards. AMD’s FSR works on any GPU and enables upscaling and augmentation for a distinct group of games, but on a far broader range of titles.

Graphics Cards Performance Results

There are now eight games in our test suite. The following charts are based on data gathered during the past few months. Only the fastest cards are tested at 1440p and 4K, however we try our best to test everything at 1080p medium and ultra.

Even though AMD’s FSR, FidelityFX Super Resolution, and Nvidia’s DLSS have been available for several months and years, respectively, none of the titles in our main set of benchmarks support either technology. All of these tests will be performed at their native resolution, as a result. In a separate paper, we compare FSR with DLSS, and the basic conclusion is that DLSS improves performance while making less sacrifices to image quality.

The RTX 30- and RX 6000-series GPUs from the current generation are included in the graphs, and we’re also testing GPUs from the previous three generations. Be certain that we’ll test any GPU you’re interested in, including the RTX 2070. Results from the 2020-2021 test system with a Core i9-9900K are included in our GPU benchmarks hierarchy. With AMD in red/grey and Nvidia in blue/black color-coding, the charts are easier to read.

The graphs below reflect the most recent data available as of March 4th, 2022. Additionally, we’ll be updating older GPU generations over the next several weeks as well.
